OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS

OUR BATHS • (To the Editor) Sir—What a pity the public baths are not situated next door to the Municipal Buildings, so that our coun- > cillors could gaze upon Masterton’s greatest example of lack of forethought. Last Saturday the baths were so overcrowded that many merely got wet. Hundreds turned away. Others didn’t go to the baths as they guessed they would be overcrowded and there were many who were afraid to go as they feared catching some disease from the stagnant' water. Personally I. think that by sending children to these baths, parents are endangering their health. Yes and there will be many readers who will say: “Impossible, the idea, new baths while there is a war on!” Actually they - ' would have been more valuable dur- / ing the war than afterwards. All the hue and cry for hot showers for the soldiers would have been, avoided. What have we in Masterton of interest to active young men —some place to spend their leisure hours without wandering about the streets? We must not forget our park, but I fear there are parents who wish we did not have a park. Labour shortage is no doubt a good excuse, but why not a working bee? Perhaps some of our citizens who have been writing to the paper showing great patriotism will show a little action.—l am, etc;, DOUBTFUL. Masterton, February 8.
