WATER WASTAGE
ALLEGATION BY COUNCILLOR. COMMUNITY’S RESPONSIBILITY. An allegation that a branch of the services was drawing 26,000 gallons; of water daily from the borough main although there was a river flowing nearby was made by Councillor C. E. Grey at last nights meeting of the Masterton Borough Council. Councillor Grey protested against the borough main being drawn on when people were restricted on the use of water. A motion moved by Councillor Grey that the branch of the services be requested to install a pump in the river lapsed for want of a seconder. “Do they pay water rates?” asked Cr. R. Russell. Mr. Jordan: “Now, now, Councillor Russell.” Councillor Grey said that a pump could easily be installed in the river and would save drawing on the supply. Mr. Jordan said that he endeavoured to work in co-operation with the Forces. Water was being wasted and would be wasted until it was metered to each consumer and they paid for what they used. It was not fair to say the branch of the Services was depleting the supply. The shortage was due to wastage and the lack of a sense of responsibility in the community regarding the use of water.
