CLIMATE AND ENERGY

BEARING ON DEVELOPHENT OF NATIONS BOOK BY BRITISH AUTHOR. NEW ZEALAND' AMONG FAVOURED LANDS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.50 a.m.) LONDON, January 28. The “Standard's” diarist reports that Mr S. F. Markham, M.P., despite fulltime Army service, has found time to complete a book, “Climate and the Energy of Nations,” on which he had been working for several years before the outbreak of war. Mr Markham traces the influence of climate upon history, the possibility of artificially controlling climate and the effect of such a possibility upon the future of civilisation. He believes that the areas of the world most worth living in include New Zealand, the American Pacific coast, South-East Australia, Holland, Switzerland and South-East England. Mr Markham maintains that the nation which can keep its citizens in ideal conditions, whether indoor or outdoor, has a great opportunity of leading the world in health, energy, trade and culture.
