SUNK IN BURMESE RIVER AFTER ATTACKING INDIAN NAVAL VESSEL. SUCCESSFUL BRITISH AIR OPERATIONS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.45 a.m.) RUGBY, January 26. An Indian war communique today states: “No change is reported from the Arakan front. On Sunday night a Royal Indian Navy ship, on patrol on the Mayu River was rammed by a heavy, camouflaged coastal craft, full of Japanese troops. The Navy vessel opened fire and backed away, and then proceeded to ram and sink the enemy vessel. The Japanese casualties were at least 50 while ours were two officers wounded.
On Monday, R.A.F. Hurricanes made a highly successful low-level attack on enemy motor transport along the Faungup-Padaung Road, in south-west Burma. Ten military lorries and a staff car were destroyed and many others were damaged. A considerable number of Japanese soldiers were killed or wounded. Fighter-bombers raided the Schwebo aerodrome and other targets in that district, and Hudson bombers, on an offensive patrol, damaged shipping along the Arakan coast. Last night, long-range bombers attacked the Schwebo aerodrome and all bombers were seen to burst in the target area. From these and other operations' none of our planes are missing.” ', .
