FURTHER PROGRESS

TOWARDS TUNISIAN FRONTIER Made by the Eighth Army AIR FORCES ATTACKING VIGOROUSLY NO RENEWAL .OF GERMAN OFFENSIVE IN CENTRAL TUNISIA LONDON, January 26. Advance troops of the British Eighth Army are still nearer to the Tunisian frontier. Yesterday they occupied the village of Zavia, 30 miles west of Tripoli and about half-way along the railway running to Zuara. The R.A.F. is going ahead of the advancing troops and smashing up Axis airfields. The R.A.F, wants especially to drive the Luftwaffe away from the forward bases within range of Tripoli, so that Tripoli Harbour may be put in working order as a supply base for the Allies. The vanguard of the Fighting French troops which advanced from the Chad region entered Tripoli yesterday and made contact with the British commander. Since starting out from the Chad this force has fought its way through nearly 1500 miles of some of the most difficult country in North Africa. In Central Tunisia, Allied forces continue to operate successfully. Bad weather restricted air activity yesterday. Allied troops patrolling the Ousseltra valley advanced 15 miles before they came into contact with the enemy. The Germans have made no attempt to resume their offensive.
