FIGHTING IN BURMA

STRONG COASTAL POSITIONS. OCCUPIED BY JAPANESE. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, Noon.) RUGBY, January 22. An agency correspondent reports that the Japanese have established strong positions on the Bay of Bengal side of the Mayu Peninsula, in Burma. The wooded nature of the country would hide any but large forces could not operate without utter confusion. The correspondent says the position has hardened since the last visit, just before Christmas, when the Japanese had to make a sudden withdrawal in face of the powerful British advance which was carried to Maungdaw, Buthedaung and well on the way to Rathedaung. Now the enemy has been counter-attacking a temple hill which has been in British hands for seven days. The Japanese have also shown signs ol holding on grimly to Rathedaung.
