MALE STUDENTS
MILITARY TRAINING UNITS. SUGGESTED BY UNIVERSITY SENATE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, January 21. The University Senate among its concluding business adopted a suggestion that it should ask the authorities to consider the advisability of establishing in each university college a military unit consisting of male students between the ages of 18 and 21, and that the Army authorities be asked to post university students to the university unit, in which they might continue their studies, combined with military training. It was explained that this was the system in some centres, but it was desired to extend the scheme. Questions relating to lodging appeals against military service on behalf of students with special excellence were discussd in committee, and on the motion of Dr Newlands it was resolved that the matter be referred to a full executive committee of the Senate, with power to act, and that it be recommended that only most exceptional cases be considered.
