89 DIVISIONS

SIXTY OF THEM GERMAN

MAULED BY THE RUSSIANS. DURING LAST TWO MONTHS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 11.35 a.m.) RUGBY, January 20. In addition to 29 Rumanian, Italian and Hungarian divisions badly mauled in the last two months on the Russian front, at least 60 German divisions, excluding those trapped in the Stalingrad area, are regarded as in a similar state. MORE TOWNS TAKEN BY THE RUSSIANS. IN CAUCASUS & FURTHER NORTH. LONDON, January 20. More big successes are reported by the Russians on the Voronezh and DoYi fronts and in the Caucasus. Two more important towns have been captured in the Caucasus —Proletarskaya, 20 miles north-east of Salsk, and Nevinnomysskaya, midway between Mineralnye Vody and Armavir. In the Donetz Basin, the Russians have captured a centre 40 miles northwest of Millerovo and the same distance from Voroshilovgrad. TRAPPED GERMANS WEST OF THE RIVER DON. MANY SURRENDERING. (Received This Day, 1.20 p.m.) LONDON, January 20. Reuter’s Moscow correspondent reports that many men have surrendered from the large number of Hitler’s divisions hopelessly trapped in the corridor between the Don and the Kamensk-Rosoch section of the Voronezh-Rostov railway. The systematic annihilation of others is proceeding. ■The “Red Star” compares the numerical importance of the encirclement with that before Stalingrad.
