AT MASTERTON RAM FAIR 410 GUINEAS FOR SOUTHDOWN. NO COMPETITION TOWARDS END OF SALE. Buyers from all parts of New Zealand operated freely at the annual stud ram fair held yesterday at the Solway Showgrounds, Masterton. The entries in both'- the Southdown and Romney sections were of consistently good quality, and the animals were true to type.

The top price of the sale was realised by a fine Southdown ram bred by Mr R. M. Perry, of Masterton, which was sold for 410 guineas to W. Dalziell and Sons, of Palmerston North. A Massey College representative contested Mr Dalziell’s bidding. Mr Perry topped the Southdown section of the sale last year with a ram which realised 230 gns. In the Romney section, top price was realised by a ram submitted by J. G. and I. R .Donald, of the Lower Valley, which went to Mr M. Kirkpatrick ,of Gore, for 300 guineas. Last year a Donald Bros.’ entry also topped the sale at 300 guineas, and this likewise went to a Gore buyer. In the Southdown section, 18 pens realised 1,972 guineas, an average of 109.5 guineas. Last year 21 pens realised 1,542 J gns., for an average of 73.4 gns. In the Romney section, 66 pens realised 6,160 gns., an average of 91.8 gns. Last year 43 pens realised 3,797} gns., or an average of 88 gns. Buyers showed keen discrimination for animals which suited their requirements, and after the eyes had been picked out of the offering, passings became the order of the day. On account of the increased number of entries this year, the sale continued until late in the afternoon, and those vendors whose rams were last on the list were unfortunate in that practically all the buyers had drifted away. Many outstanding and high quality lines either went cheaply or were passed in for lack of buyers. Prices were:— STUD SOUTHDOWN RAMS. A/c. R. M. Perry: 1 at 70gns., to T. D. Nicholl, Dannevirke.
