Miss P. Duncan, of Tiraumea, is visiting Masterton. Mrs Ball, who had been staying with Mrs Carey, Lansdowne, has returned to Napier.

Mrs Ashdown and family, Cole Street, Masterton, have returned from a visit to Napier.

Mr and Mrs A. W. Chapman, of Masterton, will leave this week on a visit to Invercargill. Mr and Mrs S. L. P. Free, High Street, Masterton, who had been visiting Morere, have returned to Masterton.

The Hon. A. Hamilton, Minister in Charge of War Expenditure, returned to Wellington yesterday from Auckland. Mrs Wedderspoon, Perry Street, Masterton, has received advice that her son, Pte. James Cook, is a prisoner of war. He was previously reported missing. The Hon. H. G. R. Mason, acting Native Minister, left Wellington last night for the King Country and Bay of Plenty districts. He will return to Wellington about the middle of next week. The engagement is announced of Amy Marion, eldest daughter’ of Mr and Mrs G. H. Graham, of Waverley, to Major R. C. Wilson, 2nd N.Z.E.F., of the General Staff, Army Headquarters, Wellington. A presentation was made yesterday to Miss O. Williams, a member of the staff of Messrs Krahagen and Chapman, Masterton, in honour of her approaching marriage. In handing Miss Williams a cheque, Mr R. Krahagen conveyed to her the best wishes of the firm and staff for her future.

The Rev. Dr. Hugh O’Neill, who is at present resident at St. Kevin’s College, Oamaru, has been appointed Roman Catholic Coadjutor Bishop of Dunedin, with the right of succession. Dr. ONeill was born in Dunedin, a son of the late Mr Edward ONeill and Mrs Elizabeth ONeill, Dunedin. He was educated at the Convent of Mercy School, Mosgiel, and the Christian Brothers High School, Dunedin, and entered Holy Cross College, Mosgiel, in 1914. Dr. O’Neill was ordained in 1941. After his ordination, Dr. O’Neill went to the Irish College in Rome, and after two years’ study was awarded the 'degree of Doctor of Canon Law. For the next 10 years he was a professor at Holy Cross College, Mosgiel, and in 1933 became parish priest at Mosgiel. He remained there for five years, and for the past four years has been chaplain at St. Kevin’s College, and national organiser of the pontifical missionary works.
