STRANGE DELAY
IN RELEASING PEOPLE DETAINED BV VICHY CAUSE OF BEWILDERMENT IN NORTH AFRICA. GERMAN CONTROL IN TUNIS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 1.10 a.m.) LONDON, January 13. Reuter’s Istanbul correspondent reports that the Germans have completely suppressed the French administration of the city of Tunis. They have sealed all buildings and the military have taken over all authority and refused permission to French residents to leave for France. With reference to the Algiers announcement of the setting up of a Commission to consider the cases of political prisoners, correspondents point out that an unknown number of political prisoners has been detained since the days of the Vichy administration. Delay in the appointment of the commission has been the principal cause of bewilderment and dismay among French Republican de Gaullist elements. Those detained include Poles, Czechs, Belgians and other refugees.
