GREYTOWN

BOWLING GOLD BARS CONTEST. (“Times-Age” Special.) A Thompson and H. Carter defended the Gold Bars three times over the weekend, and were defeated in the last game by Larsen and Harrington. AIRMAN KILLED POPULAR FOOTBALLER’S DEATH. Advice was received in Greytown last night that Sergeant Pilot T. J. (“Terry”) Sugrue had been killed in a flying accident in Canada on January 10. He left New Zealand in January, 1942, to train in Canada, and gained his wings a few months later. He was educated at the Greytown District High School and while still at school played senior Rugby football. He was an outstanding footballer, representing Wairarapa for a number of seasons, and being very popular on and off the field of play. He was also a prominent member of the Greytown Swimming Club. His parents, Mr and Mrs J. Sugrue and family will have the sympathy of the whole district in their bereavement. Heavy Downpour of Rain. After a stifling hot day yesterday, thunder, lightning and heavy ram were experienced at 4.30 p.m. The water channels were unable to cope with the water and the footpaths in the business area of the town were flooded. About 5 p.m. office and shop girls could be seeen making their way along the footpath bare-footed. Two hundred and two points of rain were registered yesterday. Personal Items. Mrs W. Carwell-Cooke has returned to Palmerston North after having spent a holiday with Mrs Duff, Main Street. Constable A. Gregor is at present on his annual leave, and is being relieved by Constable Howell ,of Featherston. Swimming Baths. The Greytown Swimming Baths were opened yesterday for the first time this season and were well patronised. TOWN HALL ' “49th PARALLEL.” Tonight there will be presented what is considered to be the greatest adventure picture ever* brought to the screen, “49th Parallel,” telling a vivid story of a trek of a Nazi submarine crew and the trail of death they leave behind them. Leslie Howard, Laurence OlivI ier, Raymond Massey and Anton Walbrook have the chief roles.
