Lambing Record.
For the first time in the history of the Dominion, lambing, percentages have exceeded 90 per cent for three years in succession, last season’s estimate of 91.43 being the highest yetrecorded. The estimate prepared by the Department of Agriculture is not as accurate as in previous years, the number of breeding ewes being based on the figures for 1941, as none were available for last year. South Island returns have been consistently higher’ than those for the North Island for the past five years, and this year the southern percentage is the highest on record. North Island estimates are also high. The actual number of lambs tailed during the year is not available, but the Dominion total is estimated at 18,314,179, which is about 20,000 fewer than the actual number for 1941. The estimate for the North Island is 10,134,505. While the number of breeding ewes in the Dominion has increased from 19,332,077 in 1937, to 20,030,933 in 1941, the lambing percentage has risen from 88.71 to 91.43.
