BOWLING
PARK CLUB VETERAN MEDALS MATCH. AN INTERESTING COMPETITION. Many interesting games were played on the Masterton Park Bowling Club’s green last week. On Saturday there was an attendance of over sixty players, including several visitors. The outstanding event of the week was the first game for the Veteran Medals, which were donated by Mr J. C. Ewington for competition fortnightly between members over 70 years of age of the Park and Masterton clubs. Mr Ewington is a member of both clubs. In welcoming the visitors, Mr H. M. Smith, vice-president of the Park Club, expressed the hope that the veterans would have many pleasant games. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr Ewington, who wished the respective teams the best of luck and many pleasant games. On behalf of the Masterton Club, Mr C.. Perry thanked Mr Ewington for his very fine gesture and the happy thought that prompted it. He expressed the hope that Mr Ewington would soon be restored to that state of health whereby he could participate in the games himself. The teams were: Park, Messrs J. Coe, J. G. Shearer, A. E. Kilgour, H. Carr (s) and Masterton, Messrs A. 'Hendry, T. Denbee, W. R. Doughty, C. Perry (s). The game was most interesting, the leading being of a high order for men over 70, whilst Denbee excelled himself, and Carr was always accurate with his running shots. Perry took the lead early in the garpe, but on the 9th end the scores were 11 all. Carr did not score on the next 6 ends, during which Perry added 8 points, the board reading 19/11 on the 14th end. Carr scored on 5 of the remaining 7 ends, but Perry kept the scores down to singles, the game ending 22/17 in Masterton’s favour. The players were the guests of Mt J. C. Ewington at afternoon tea in the Kiosk. The aggregate age of the Masterton team was 309 years, the average 77, and of the Park team 298 years and 74 respectively. Other games played resulted: Champion fours: Davies, Garard, Duckworth, F. Dixon (s) beat McCord, P. Smith, Moore, O’Donnell, 25/17; H. Brown (s); Darvill and Kilgour beat Spackman and Reader 24/18 in a game that‘was very evenly contested until the 16th end. H. Dixon and F. Dixon beat Drummond and Winhall 32/18. Winhall led early in the game but a six and four fours were too great a hurdle.
