UTMOST EFFORT

DEMANDED OF AUSTRALIANS FEDERAL PREMIER’S WARNING & APPEAL. USE OF MILITIA OUTSIDE COMMONWEALTH. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, January 4. The Australian Prime Minister, Mr Curtin, declared today: “We cannot expect others to come to our aid' if we ourselves are not doing our utmost.” He was supporting his own motion for amendment of the Defence Act to enable the militia to be sent out of Australia to territories bound up with the defence of the Commonwealth. Mr Curtin’s remarks were made at an inter-State conference of the Australian Labour Party. He said that Government approval of his proposal would not necessarily mean the merging of the A.I.F. and the militia into one body. He stressed the importance of depriving the Japanese of the chance to mass troops at Timor and other strategic points. Substantial forces might have to be sent to such places at any time.
