REGENT THEATRE

“GEORGE AND MARGARET.”

“George and Margaret” will be screened tonight at 7.45 p.m, and finally at a late session commencing at 10.15 o'clock.

“SERGEANT YORK.”

“Sergeant York,” the picture which has received the widest acclaim in years from the nation’s film critics, will be shown on Friday afternoon and night at the Regent Theatre. With Gary Cooper in the title role as Alvin C. York, the Tennessee farmer who was America s greatest soldier hero of the World War, the picture is a compelling human document. Almost, it sounds like a piece of fiction. Actually, it is the true 'story of Alvin York, from the Valley of the Three Forks of the Wolf in Tennessee, a conscientious objector who became an American heio of the World War of 1914-18. Gary Cooper gives a splendid performance in the role of Alvin York, a young farmer who divided his youth between ploughing hard land and drinking hard liquor, and paid no heed to his local pastor. But his ways changed, and he “got religion” when the Lord stayed his hand while on his way to exact vengeance in connection with a lanu deal in which he had been wronged. From then on he became an upngnt and God-fearing citizen. War came and Alvin York immediately appealed as a conscientious objector on religious grounds, but all his appeals failed. Walter Brennan scores a success as the Matinees will be held on Saturday at 2.15 p.m. and on Monday afternoon.
