LONDON, December 23. i British naval aircraft made a surprise raid on a Japanese ’ base in the Netherlands East ; ' Indies, when they attacked ; Sabang, on an island off the northern tip of Sumatra. This is the first time this base has i been attacked since it passed into i enemy hands last March. It was a heavy raid. The aircraft picked cut military targets. Many large explosions occurred, followed by fires.
