OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS
CHIMNEY REPAIR COSTS (To the Editor.) Sir, —I have heard a suggestion that all the chimneys should be paid for out of the rates and I hasten to agree. Before the earthquake, my mortgagee and I used to own a small property in Queen Street. (That is the street which pays the rates, but has no vote on the spending of them). The earthquake came and now I turn the corner when I see my mortgagee coming. If the ratepayers will rebuild all the chimneys surely they will rebuild the shop belonging to me (and my mortgagee). In pre-war days, when I owned a motor car, the garage charged 5s 6d an hour for labour on my car. Out of curiosity I have checked six accounts and the labour, including overhead and travelling, of the people who built the chimneys seems to come out at 5s 6d an hour. Should I now write abusive letters about the garage prices or should I be thankful that in midwinter I got one chimney fixed in the time of my need. —I am. etc., CURIOUS. Masterton. December 24.
