THOUSAND KILLED
IN HEAVY EARTHQUAKE IN TURKEY Many Houses Collapse and Fires Still Burning SERIES OF SHOCKS DURING PAST MONTH PRESIDENT VISITING STRICKEN AREA (By 'Telegraph.—Press Association. —Copyright.) (Received This Day, 10.55 a.m.) LONDON, December 22. IT IS FEARED THAT ABOUT ONE THOUSAND PERSONS WERE KILLED IN A HEAVY EARTHQUAKE IN NORTH-EASTERN ANATOLIA. THE AFFECTED AREA INCLUDES TOKAT, NIKSAR AND ERBAA. ALL THE HOUSES IN ERBAA COLLAPSED AND FIRES ARE STILL BURNING.
The Swiss radio reports that a series of earthquake shocks have rocked North-Eastern and Central Turkey for the past month. President Inonu is at present touring the devastated areas. The latest shocks occurred during his visit to one of the Stricken areas, where scores of people have been killed and more than two thousand homes have been destroyed. Earthquakes have also shaken a district near Ankara, where tremors lasting two days killed 25 persons. The Berlin radio reported that high Turkish officials are among the victims.
