SOBER REALISM

URGED BY THE FEDERAL PRIME MINISTER.

IN CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION

(By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) SYDNEY, December 22. “Christmas should be celebrated with the knowledge that wc are a country in the shadow of war—soberly, confidently and realistically,” the Prime Minister, Mr Curtin, has declared in a special seasonal message. “This Christian festival is part of the cause for which we fight, but the manner in which it is celebrated is the measure of our national responsibility.” Though Mr Curtin has requested that “Christmas should not be the occasion for wild, reckless spending Australian city stores report record crowds of shoppers. However, many typical Christmas lines are not available. A Government campaign asking Australians to give war savings stamps and certificates as Christmas gifts has been a conspicuous success. For troops at home stations there will be no complete relaxation since, to quote Mr Curtin, “the enemy has the habit of choosing days of special significance to free peoples to launch attacks.”
