SPORTS WINNERS DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL. (“Times-Age” Special.) The following were the winners in connection with the sports events held by the secondary department of the Carterton district high school: — Tennis: Noelene Andrews, girls’ senior championship, championship doubles, handicap singles, combined handicap doubles. Naida Jacobsen, girls’ junior championship. Russell Sayer, boys’ senior championship, combined doubles champion, boys’ handicap doubles. Norman French, boys’ junior championship. Rex Andrews, boys’ championship doubles, handicap doubles, handicap singles. Douglas Martin, combined handicap doubles. June Williams, girls’ championship doubles. Lyn Fitzgerald, boys’ championship doubles. Swimming: Lewis Paterson, boys’ senior championship. Bruce McPhee, boys’ junior championship. Joyce Paterson, girls’ junior championship. Athletics: Russell Sayer, boys’ senior championship. James Chapman, boys’ junior championship. Betty Wellington, girls’ senior championship. Margaret Orr, girls' junior championship. BOWLING , CARTERTON CLUB. Conditions were ideal for bowling on Saturday and the Carterton Club’s green was fully occupied. Besides the club champion fours and friendly games, a team from the Park Club visited Carterton to play for the Wairarapa Centre fours, but were not successful. Saturday’s game was the third time this season that the holders (Carterton) had beaten the challengers. The afternoon tea arrangements were supervised by Mesdames H. King and Billington, to whom a vote of thanks was accorded. During the afternoon tea adjournment the president, Mr Frank L. Barr, extended the season’s greetings to all members and expressed a hope that before the next Christmas season came round the war would have ended. He also extended season’s greetings to the Park Club members and to the Wairarapa Centre. Mr Smith, secretary of the centre, reciprocated the good wishes and reminded players of the annual New Year tourney to be held at Masterton. The following were the results of the games:— Centre fours. —Carterton (Pankhurst, Simmonds, Tucker, Sorensen, s) beat Park (Trevorrow, Drummond, Brown, Smith, s), 22/11. Club champion rinks.—Booth, Colson, Newbould,. Riggs (s) beat Matson, Hall, Daysh, Hughan (s) 31/9; Beaven, Hawker, Underhill, Barr (s) beat Spooner, Hill, Callender, Harris (s), 25/10; Smith, McCarty, Barbef, Hart (s) beat Foss, Edwards, Bain, Stent (s), 24/8. Friendly games: Foster, Taylor, Curtis, Harp (s) beat Adams, Rayner, Martin, Whyte (s), ■ 20/15; Steven. Kilmister, De Lacey (s) beat Clark, King, W. Hart (s), 31/13. In the Carterton ladies’ club pairs, Mesdames Colson and Thompson (s) beat Mesdames Swan and Robinson (s); Miss Armstrong and Mrs Martin (s) beat Mesdames Adams and Booth (s). Patriotic Dance, The weekly patriotic dance held by the Carterton Patriotic Committee on Saturday night was not as well patronised as usual but nevertheless a very enjoyable time was spent. The music was provided by the orchestras of Messrs Tom Udy and F. Pool. Extras were played by Mrs R. Williams, Messrs S. Hemi and T. Udy. The winners of the’ lucky spot waltzes were Miss A. McPhee and Mr D. Gayfer and Miss V. Fitzgerald and Mr L, Gallon. Mr P. L. Beere was an efficient M.C. The supper arrangements were supervised by Mesdames. H. Goodin and L. M. Clark and Misses Trapp and Wolters. Earthquakes. Two earthquakes were felt in Carterton this morning, one just after 2 o’clock and another at 10.20 o’clock. Personal Items. Leading Aircraftman C. S. Martin, fourth .son of Mr and Mrs, W. Martin, of Rexwood Street, Carterton, was this morning the recipient of a presentation from citizens of Carterton, In handing the. gift' to Leading Aircraftman Martin the Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, wished him the 'best of luck and a safe return to New Zealand. Mrs H. Hodder, on behalf of the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union, presented a parcel of woollen garments to Leading Aircraftman Martin. Mr L. J. Loftus, manager of the local. Branch of the Bank of New South Wales, was stepping from the roadway on to the footpath near the’ Power Board’s premises cn Friday when he fell heavily to the ground and broke bones in one forearm. REGENT THEATRE “CALL A COP." George Formby’s greatest comedy picture, “Call a Cop,” will be Anally shown tonight. It is a timely tonic for these strenuous days, in which mirth, music and song are excellently blended.
