LEPER FEND APPEAL

GENEROUS PUBLIC RESPONSE. ■ Expressing gratitude to all who have given generously to the funds of the Lepers Trust Board, the chairman, Mr T. F. Fletcher, and the secretary, Mr P. J. Twomey, have issued a circular and balance-sheet, covering the activities of nine months. It is also stated that the recent appeal resulted in the collection of no less a sum than £9900, a response that is considered to be magnificent, seeing that the appeal was made at a time when , the Government and half-a-dozen other organisations were also appealing to the public for funds. For months, from February 1 to October, 31 1942, the receipts totalled £16,383, which included £8399 acquired by collections, and £5500 from fixed deposits withdrawn. The main items on the payments side is the Solomons Island allocation of £5OOO, to which has to be added £3OOO for the Makogai Lepers Rehabilitation and Sick Comforts Fund, £lOOO divided equally betwween the Melanesian Mission, Methodist Mission, Mairst Mission and Seventh Day Adventist Mission. The sum of £4OOO was invested in the purchase of New Zealand Government inscribed stock, of which (a note says) £3OOO has been transferred intact for Cook and Samoan Island allocations. The expenses amount to £1029 10s 6d.
