HEAVY CASUALTIES
PROBABLY INFLICTED ON ENEMY IN MATRATIN SURPRISE (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 11.55 a.m.) RUGBY, December 18. In yesterday’s fighting between our advanced patrol and the intercepted enemy rearguard, states a correspondent -with the Eighth Army, casualties were probably heavy in both personnel and vehicles. The enemy was completely surprised by our flanking movement. The fact that only three German aircraft, one of which was shot down, ventured over the battle area, shows that the German, command is now busily engaged in attempting to save the remnants of the Afrika Korps.
