OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS
EARTHQUAKE REPAIRS (To the Editor.) Sir, —No doubt there are some people who will follow the Mayor’s advice, and pay their earthquake repair accounts with as good grace as they can muster and then try to forget the whole sorry business. But will they even then be freed of all liability? The money for earthquake repairs has been paid out and must be reimbursed by someone. Some people are financially unable to meet the demands while others are not going to submit tamely to being “taken down.’’ No court in the British Empire would uphold some of the charges that have been made, and no doubt there are many who are not sufficiently grateful at merely being alive to refrain from taking their case to a court of Jaw. I think it is inevitable that when all the available money is gathered in a serious shortage will be revealed . Who is going to find this money? Probably our Borough Council will have to find its share, and in that event will those “lambs” who pay their accounts promptly, be “fleeced” again later by way of rates to help make up the deficiency. Until the whole position is clarified I think people will be wise to l hold on to their money.—l am, etc., “SUSPICIOUS.” Masterton, December 18. BOXING DAY HOLIDAY (To the Editor.) Sir, —This year, as Boxing Day falls on a Saturday, shopkeepers and their assistants are having a holiday on Mondaw Among other workers the position seems somewhat mixed, as some (so I am informed) are getting the Monday holiday, while others are receiving an extra day’s pay instead. If I remember correctly, in 1936 when Boxing Day fell on a Saturday, this was made compulsory—either the Monday holiday, or a day’s pay instead. As this is of interest to many workers,' would you find out if this was so, and if it applies to the present situation. —I am, etc., INTERESTED. Masterton ,December 17. The Inspector of Factories, Mr N. Felvin, states that there is no statutory provision for the observance on Mon-' day of holidays that fall on Saturday. Any arrangement, therefore, in respect to working on Monday and payment I for that day is a matter between the employer and the employee.—Ed.
