Calling Up Cancelled. The calling up of Victor Wiki Carroll, of Te Ore Ore, for service with the armed forces is cancelled by a Gazette notice issued today, the reason of the cancellation being that the reservist was a member of the Third Division. A Wet Year. Greymouth is experiencing one of the wettest years on record, a total of 110.11 inches having been recorded so far. Double figures have been recorded in five months, the heaviest fall being in November with 20.55 inches. Last year 92.89 inches fell, compared with 99..53 inches in 1940. and 83.4 inches in 1939. Central School Parents’ Day. Parents and friends of pupils of the Masterton Central School will be assured of a pleasant gathering tomorrow at 1.30 p.m., when the infants’ Christmas tree, displays of the new drill, and of the work of the children, will be arranged. Miss Taylor, director of physical training, will explain the points of the .drill per a microphone. In the evening a fine concert programme has been arranged, and should-prove most attractive. Two Women Injured. Two women were injured when a motor-car in which they were travelling in the Mangatawhiri Valley crashed through a bridge and nosedived into a stream at 11.30 on Sunday night. The victims were: Mrs Ellen Mclnnes, aged 58, Maramarua, lacerations to the face, shock and possible fracture of the right wrist. Miss Dorothy Freeborn, aged 20, possible fracture of the collar-bone. The driver of the car, Mr G. F. Mclnnes, was uninjured. Both women were brought to Auckland Hospital. Maori War Effort. Satisfaction with the enthusiasm shown by the tribal leaders' and the Maori people generally in the war effort, and with their determination to prosecute their own phase of the war effort to the fullest possible extent, was expressed at Auckland yesterday by the Minister in Charge of the Maori War Effort, Mr Paikea. Mr Paikea, accompanied by Lieutenant-Colonel H. C. Hemphill, chief liaison officer, recently visited the tribal executive and tribal committees under the Maori war effort organisation in Taranaki and the King Country. In those districts practically all available manpower was serving in the armed forces or in essential industries. Elocutionary Recital. On a recent evening the pupils of Miss Elizabeth Thomas, L.T.C.L., gave their annual recital in the Savage Club rooms to a large audience of parents and friends. Those taking part were: Pamela Kjestrup, Leonie Forrest. Diana Kjestrup, Joan O’Hara, Jocelyn Heath, Keitha Catherall, Gwen Groombridge, Dwyllis Nicholls, Helen Wong, Elaine Wong, Jack Turner, Catherine Roberts, Nancy Marshall, Lyndley O'Donnell, Margaret Bennett, Nola Palmer, Hilary McAskey, Joan McClymont, Mooreen Franklin and Joan Sage. At the conclusion of the programme, Pamela Kjestrup, on behalf of the pupils, presented Miss Thomas with a gift as a token of appreciation.
