FATAL INJURIES

SUB.-LIEUT. JOHN MACKENZIE DOUGLAS. DEATH ON ACTIVE SERVICE. The many friends of Mr and Mrs H. Mackenzie Douglas, of Pownall Street, Master ton, will regret to hear of the death of their oldest son, Sub.-Lieuten-ant (A) John Mackenzie Douglas, R.N.Z.N.V.R., which occurred in England on December 11, following on injuries received in an aircraft crash. The late Sub.-Lieutenant Douglas, who was born in Maslerlon in 1919, was educated at'the Masterton Central School and Wairarapa High School. It was largely through his untiring efforts that the High School Pipe Band was formed and he became its first pipe-major. Later, he took up a position in Wellington with the legal firm of Messrs Duncan and Hanna and had passed several sections of the examination for his LI.B. degree. Volunteering for service in the Fleet Air Arm. he left New Zealand in May, 19-11, and received his commission in June last. He had been on operational duties since the beginning of October. On Saturday afternoon advice was received that he was dangerously ill from injuries received in an aircraft crash and yesterday afternoon word of his death came to hand. The sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended to the bereaved parents and family.
