BRUTAL ASSAULT
CN POLICE CONSTABLE IN HAWKE’S BAY. TWO MAORIS SENT TO GAOL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WAIROA, This Day. For what was described as a brutal assault on a police constable, presiding Justices this morning sentenced two Maoris—Stanley Smith to six weeks' imprisonment, and Hawera Mcihana to two months' imprisonment in the Napier gaol. On Saturday night Constable Houston found the accused in the vicinity of a dance hall at Nuhaka, in possession of a keg of beer. When he was taking the liquor to his car, Constable Houston was struck by a bottle on his shoulder, and, flashing his torch, saw Meihana in a ditch by the roadside. The latter then commenced throwing more bottles, one of which struck Constable Houston on his head, inflicting injuries. Constable Houston then drew his baton, disabling one Maori, whilst the others made off. It was slated in evidence that stirrup irons and. leathers were also used in the attack, while a store nearby had been depleted of empty bottles.
