COMMANDER OF BATTERED SAN FRANCISCO AWARD OF- CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL. BRILLIANT SEAMANSHIP & GREAT COURAGE. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Dav. Noon.) SAN FRANCISCO, December 13. Aboard the battered cruiser San Francisco, Admiral King pinned the Congressional Medal on the breast of Commander, Bruce McCandless, who, as Lieutenant-Commander, took over the ship’s direction in the thick of battle and, in the words of President Roosevelt’s citation, “through brilliant seamanship and great courage brought the ship to port and saved her to fight again.” The San Francisco whipped a Japanese battleship on November 13, in the opening phase of the Solomons naval battle. Earlier President Roosevelt announced the award of the Congressional Medal to Rear-Admiral D. Callaghan, who was killed on the San Francisco.
