FOREST FIRES
TOO NUMEROUS IN FRANCE. REPORTS OF INCENDIARISM. Forest fires in the south of France are too numerous for their cause to be normal, and a leader writer in the “Action Francaise” calls for the death penalty for fire raisers. In the hot, dry climate of the south of France, forest fires are frequent at any time, but their number has, been so great recently as to be explainable only as due to criminal action. One man confessed to lighting six forest fires. In the Trets forest, 2,500 acres of forest were destroyed, and the Nice trains had to be diverted. Near Hyeres, a children’s sanatorium had to be hurriedly evacuated. At Gard, .where the famous Roman bridge crosses the valley, forest fires burned for two days. A favourite method of the fire raiser is to attach matches to a weighted string hanging from a bough of a tree, the matches scraping across another stone until ignited by the swaying of the tree in the breeze. ,
