The Inter-American Committee for the political defence of the hemisphere alleges that Axis agents are endeavouring'to extort hundreds of thousands of dollars from South American firms, under threats that relatives in Axisdominated countries will suffer unless the demands are met. The committee says the money is needed to finance Axis activities in North and South America. 'The payment is usually demanded in dollars or sterling. Describing the extortion as inhuman blackmail, the committee said that about 1,250,000 dollars were demanded for the release of seven hundred refugees in one occupied country. Other single demands range as higli as 200,000 dollars.
