BRILLIANT DISPLAY
INTERHOUSE GALA DAV PRECISION IN MARCHING COMPETITION. ADDRESS BY MR PARRY. A brilliant scene of pageantry was presented on the Masterton Park Oval on Saturday afternoon when the Wairarapa Interhouse Association held its annual gala day,. There was a large and representative attendance. A thunderstorm and heavy shower delayed the opening of the marching competitions, but later in the afternoon the weather improved, there being bright sunshine. The thirteen teams in the marching competitions turned on a good all round performance and showed great precision as a result of long and careful training by the coaches. The music for the marching was played by a military camp band. Hansell’s and Hugo and Shearer No. 1 were first, equal with 79 points each, in the marching competition and Stock and Station filled next place with 764 points. Miss Valmai Price (Hansell’s) was accorded the honour of being selected as champion leader. Her win was a most popular one and she gave a splendid display. The Combined Businesses’ team, composed of Maori girls, gave a brilliant display and received an ovation from, the crowd.
The placed teams gave individual exhibitions, following which teams assembled and marched together towards the grandstand where Mr J. Robertson, M.P., spoke briefly. He extended a welcome to the visiting bandsmen and congratulated the girls on their splendid bearing and the fine show they had turned on. Mr Robertson introduced Mr Parry, Minister of Recreation and Physical Welfare. In his remarks Mr Parry said that the display by the girls compared favourably with the other interhouse displays he had seen in New Zealand, and he congratulated the girls on the marvellous precision and team work which they had shown in their marching. The military judges had an exceedingly hard task in making their decision's both for the marching and the neatest costuming. There was a margin of only 17 points between the first and the last teams.
The winning teams and their coaches were: —Hansell’s (white and red): Leader, Miss V. Price; coach, Mr C. C. Harding; Misses R. Harding, J. Voyce, E. Talbot, R. Stains, J. Gleason, D. Kenny, J. McAllister, and C. Talbot. Hugo and Shearer No. 1: Leader, Miss B. Vincent; coaches, Mr Butler and Lieutenant J. Meanie; Misses N. Wilson, O. Mills, J. McErlick, B. Cardno, V. Foster, B. Hanley, J. Rossiter and T. Davis. Stock and Station Agents: Leader, Miss Winnie Nyhan; coach, Mr S. C. J. Allen; Misses Coralie Cairns, Betty Mayhew. Edna McGovern, Beryl Hawke, Norma Fly. June Phillips, Edna Allen and Greta Nyhan.
The points scored by the various teams were: —Hugo and Shearer No. 1 and Hansell’s, 79; Stock and Station Agents, 76|; W.F.C.A. No. 1 and W.F.C.A. No. 2, 74; Post and Telegraph, 72|; Graham and Co., Ltd., 71 i; Wairarapa Transport, 71; Combined Businesses, 701; Cathie’s, 664; Hugo and Shearer No. 2, 64; J. R. McKenzie, 63; Wairarapa Steam Laundry, 62. Points for the champion leader were: 'Miss V. Price 134, Miss W. Nini 121, Miss B. Stewart 124, Miss S. Kennedy 12, Miss W. Nyhan 12, Miss P. Cretney 111, Miss B. Vincent 111, Miss Hazel Sutherland 11, Miss J. Cairns 11, Miss M. Gerrand 10, Miss V. Grimwood 10, Miss M. McCormack 10, Miss A. J. Tooby 8. • Points for the neatest costuming were Hansell’s, Post and Telegraph, W.F.C.A. No. 2, Cathies, equal, 10 points; W.F.C.A. No. 1, Graham and Co., Hugo & Shearer No. 1, Wairarapa Transport, Combined Businesses, equal. 9 points; J. R. McKenzies and Wairarapa Steam Laundry, equal, 8 points; Stock and Station, 7 points Hugo and Shearer Ni. 2, 66 points. Hansell’s won the Sports Cup for the most points in the athletic sports. Credit is due to the committee, under the able chairmanship of Mr G. Daubney, for the efficient manner in which the competition and the sports programme was carried out. DANCE AT ASSEMBLY HALL. The Wairarapa College Assembly Hall was packed to the doors for the dance held on Saturday night. Large numbers were turned away. All the teams paraded and" prizes and troph-! ies were presented by Mr Parry. An apology for absence was received from Mrs L. B. Maunsell, wife of the president of the Association. Mr G. Daubney, chairman of the association executive, congratulated the girls and the coaches on their display and referred to the good work of Lieutenant Nuttall. He also welcomed Pte. D. Costello, a former secretary, and thanked him for his assistance. Mr Daubney made special reference to the untiring work put in by the secretary, Mr G. Davis, and members of the. committee. Dancing was enjoyed to music supplied by Mrs Ashton’s Orchestra, assisted by visiting bandsmen. Messrs L. Askew and J. Bruce were efficient M’s.C. Popular items were given by the Maori girls’ team under Miss W. Nini. Misses D. and J. Atkinson sang, Miss W. Atkinson being the accompaniste. Songs were also given by Miss Nini and Nurse'J. Douglas. Yesterday afternoon there was a large and appreciative audience in the Park to hear a concert by the visiting band and last night the gala weekend programme was brought to a close when an outstanding concert was presented in the Regent Theatre, which was packed.
