MAURICEVILLE
SCHOOL PICNIC LAMB AND CALF COMPETITIONS. (“Times-Age” Special.) On Saturday the Mauriceville East School held its annual picnic, and agricultural calf and lamb competitions, on the property of the A. W. I. Cameron Estate, the gathering being very successful. The School Committee desire to thank the head teacher, Mrs C. M. Childs, and her assistant, Mrs J. Pain, and also the ladies and other helpers, for their valuable assistance in making the gathering such a success. Apologies for absence were received, from Messrs A. Donald (a member of the Education Board) and Deavoll (secretary of the Education Board), Stubbs (Senior Inspector of Schools). Robertson, M.P., Brockett (Instructor of Agriculture), and Lieut. Vette (Gisborne). There was a large number of sporting events, the main.championship race being won by Bill Baine, with Charlie Wilkin and Liam O’Neill taking second place. The judging of calves and lambs took place after the lunch adjournment, the judges being Messrs H. Myers, Senr., and D. Bennett. The junior agricultural club associated with the committee extend their thanks to the judges. Mi’ Myers made some instructive comments to the children, covering the good and bad points to be noted when assessing the worth of a calf. The folowing were the results of the judging:—Champion lamb, Norrie O’Neill 1, Margaret O’Neill 2; lamb rearing and handling, Margaret O’Neill 1, Terrence McGruddy 2; black face, Terrence McGruddy 1, Elva McKeown 2; champion calf, Liam O’Neill 1, Rex McArley 2; rearing and ' handling, Nathy O’Neill 1, Liam O’Neill 2. Mr McKenzie, of the Education Board, presented the cups to .the successful competitors, and congratulated the children on their efforts.
On behalf of the junior agricultural club, Charlie Wilkin thanked those who had given assistance to the club, and expressed the appreciation of the club to the donors of the cups and prizes. W. Baine, on behalf of the Mauriceville East school children, thanked the head teacher and assistant for the sympathetic and generous attitude displayed towards the children during the past year. He also thanked the school committee and outside helpers who had assisted the children in school activities throughout the year. Nancy Cheetham handed to Mrs Childs a little gift from the children, and Audrey Meredith presented Mrs Pain with a bouquet of roses. The picture frame competition was won by W. Baine. At the conclusion of the gathering, Mr F. Pain, on behalf of the school committee, thanked all present for their attendance and for the help given to the school children. Mrs Childs expressed appreciation for all that had been done to assist the children. She particularly thanked the children for the support given her throughout the year. Mrs Childs said that the school would be losing one or two pupils this year, and these would enter the Wairarapa College, and she wished these children the best of luck.
