LOCAL AND GENERAL

Fall Down Steps. Pearl Bush, aged 9 years, of Matahiwi Station, fell down some steps and cut her leg on Saturday afternoon. She was admitted to Masterton Hospital, and her condition is satisfactory. Athletic Events Abandoned. The women’s and junior athletic championships will not be held this season. This was decided at the annual meeting f of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association in Wellington on Saturday. Travel restrictions, and the small number of athletes now available, were two reasons mentioned. Mortar Platoon of Home Guard. Members of the mortar platoon of the Masterton Home Guard had a profitable day’s instruction yesterday when tuition was given by Sergeant Ward on elementary and advanced mortar work. There was a full muster of members. Tests carried out in the afternoon exceeded expectations, the results being most satisfactory. Grade 111 Returned Men. War Cabinet has decided that returned servicemen in the Grade 111 medical category shall be permitted either to remain in the forces or to be discharged and receive at once the benefits of the Government’s rehabilitation provisions. This decision, the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, announced on Saturday, would be brought into immediate operation. Sugar Rations. Some householders have apparently stolen a march on the rest of the community in procuring rationed sugar for jam-making. In August, on .personal application, householders were allowed •an extra 31b a head for sugar used in the previous month for preserving purposes. It was stated at the time that the allowance would be subtracted from any issue which might be made during the main jam-making season and retailers were asked to record the quantities of sugar supplied by permits under the arrangement. However, the new issue has been made available to all, as far as the grocers are concerned. Allocation of Cycle Tires. An increase in the allocation of cycle tires was announced on Saturday by the Minister of Supply, Mr Sullivan. “It has long been recognised that' the allocation of cycle tires to local committees have not been sufficient to meet demands, but the allocation has been based on productive capacity and the available supply of rubber,” said the Minister. “The position has been under continuous review by the control committee in Wellington. After reviewing the supply position and the demand for tires, the committee has agreed to increase the allocations of tires by approximately 20 per cent. It has also been agreed that stocks of tires held by dealers — and there are comparatively few of these —shall be released for sale under the existing control measures, The sale of tires ’and tubes with new cycles will also be facilitated, but it must, be borne in mind that such sales will be subject to the requirements of essentiality and the procedure of control. The committee realises that these steps will not suffice to meet the heavy demand, and that, at best, they will only serve to meet cases of urgent need,”
