DOMINION SPREAD
OF FIREBLIGHT DISEASE GREYTOWN APPLE ORCHARD AFFECTED. OTAGO & HAWKE’S BAY HARD HIT. Fireblight in a mild form has broken out all over the Dominion.. In the Otago and Hawke’s Bay districts the pear orchards are seriously infected. Apple trees in the Loasby Estate orchard at Grey town have the disease in a severe form. In making known those facts Mr W. A. Tate, a well known Greytown orchardist, who was in Wellington yesterday to attend a conference of. the Fruit' Growers’ Federation, at . wmeh the Prime Minister and the Minister of Agriculture were present, to discuss the price for next season’s fruit, said the disease had broken out at an unfortunate time as a great deal of labour would be required for tiec suigery work. However, with the labour that was obtainable the work would be pushed on as quickly as possible.
OUTBREAK IN NELSON. DISEASE FAIRLY WIDESPREAD. (By Telegraph—-Pijess Association.) NELSON, November 25. An outbreak of fireblight has occurred in the Nelson district this season, and as a result of a survey by officers of the Department of Agriculture it is evident that the disease is fairly widespread, but varies in intensity. In the Stoke, Richmond and Hope areas the infection is most severe. The infection, which evidently took place during the blossoming,, has resulted in the typical kill of fruit spurts on apples and pears and further infection of growing shoots has followed. Fortunately only a few instances have been revealed of crops being appreciably reduced this season on account of fireblight, but some loss has occurred. _____
