CARTERTON

S.M. COURT CIVIL AND POLICE CASES. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., presided over the monthly sitting of the Carterton Magistrates’ Court yesterday. Judgment was given for plaintiff by default in the following cases: —Carterton Borough Council v F. J. Sewell, claim £2 6s Id, costs 13s; Community Stores v AV. Jordan, claim £1 18s 9d, costs Gs 9d. T. E. Teal, for having ridden a bicycle after dark without displaying a light thereon, was fined £1 with costs 10s. J. Lanigan was charged by the police that he had purchased on October 8 at Carterton oil fuel under a consumer’s licence and had used it otherwise than for the purpose set out in the application for such a licence. Defendant pleaded guilty and was fined £2 with costs 10s.

Eva A. M. Petersen (Mr J. F. Thompson) was charged by the Carterton police that on November 7 she drove a taxi along High Street at a greater speed than 30 miles per hour. A fine of £3 was imposed with costs 10s. A. E. Ansell, transport officer, charged L. H. Morris that on September 3 he drove, a motor vehicle along the main Carterton highway at an excessive speed. A fine of £2, with costs 12s, was imposed. L. J. Williams, a barman at the Club Hotel, Carterton, was charged by the police that on October 31, he sold intoxicating liquor to a member of the Armed Forces, Pte. K. Mackintosh, when he was in uniform, for consumption elsewhere than on the premises, where it was sold. C. E. Larsen, licensee, was similarly charged. Mr J. F. Thompson appeared for defendants, who pleaded not guilty. The police in evidence said that they had visited the hotel in question on October 31 and saw Pte. Mackintosh purchase a bottle of beer and place it beneath his tunic. Mr Thompson quoted the emergency liquor laws and a ruling given by Mr Justice Johnston on a similar case recently. The Magistrate reserved his decision until after the Christmas holidays. OBITUARY MRS E. F. VENNELL. The death occurred suddenly last night of Mrs Elizabeth Frances Vennell, of Kent Street, Carterton. She was about as usual yesterday and during the day complained of a pain , in her chest. At six o’clock last evening she was visited by her daughter, who found her in a state of collapse. Dr Wells was called and pronounced life 1 to be extinct. BOWLING CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES. Games in the Carterton Club championships have been played as under: Champion singles: Barr beat Barber, 21/13; Harp beat Daysh, 19/18; Hughan beat Callender, 26/7. Champion pairs: Martin and Callender (s) beat Smith and Barber (s), 20/13. Card Tournament. There was a very large attendance at the band room last evening when the Boy Scout Committee held a card tournament. The prize winners were Mesdames C. Bambry, W. Miller, A. Thompson and Mr G. Goodin. Delivery Days. The grocers of Carterton announce that owing to the shortage of manpower the delivery of goods can only be macle in the town on Tuesdays, Thursday and Saturdays. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs E. R. Wilkins have returned to Carterton after having spent three weeks holiday in the Auckland and Hamilton districts. The death occurred today in the Masterton Public Hospital of Jennifer Lenora Harland, daughter of Mr and Mrs Thomas Harland, of Gladstone, at the age of two years. The funeral will take place tomorrow at 1.30 p.m., leaving the residence, Gladstone, for the Clareville Cemetery. .
