STUTTGART BLITZED
HEAVY & DAMAGING R.A.F. ATTACK TARGET LEFT WELL ABLAZE. TEN BRITISH AIRCRAFT LOST. LONDON, November 23. A strong squadron of Stirlings was among the R.A.F. bomber forces which successfully blitzed the important railway and war industry centre of Stuttgart, in South Germany, last night, and not a single Stirling was lost. The intensity of the raid appears in the fact that although Lancasters and other bombers were also employed, the Stirlings alone dropped thirty tons of incendiary bombs. Bomber crews who came towards the end of the raid reported that the target was well ablaze, with many big fires well concentrated. For a German target there was comparatively little anti-aircraft fire, but night fighters were in action and ten of our bombers are missing.
GOOD RESULTS OBTAINED IN THE RAID ON STUTTGART. SUPPLY SHIP SET ON FIRE IN CHANNEL. (British. Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.40 a.m.) RUGBY, November 23. The Air Ministry states: “The important industrial and communication centre of Stuttgart was attacked by a strong force of bombers last night. Drifting cloud hampered visibility but low-level observation confirmed that the results were good. "Our fighters attacked a goods train in Northern France and an enemy supply ship was ■ set on fire in the Channel. “Stuttgart is an important centre for submarine and aircraft engines and contains the headquarters of Bosch, leading makers of ignition parts; Daim-ler-Benz, manufacturing tanks, Messerschmitt and Heinkel engines and heavy lorries and Hirth precision equipment. It is also an important railway junction.”
