IRISH HUNTERS

DRAWING MEAT-VANS IN LONDON. By those who do not approve of hunting it may be felt that another case of war’s more useful possibilities has been discovered through the importation of a number of Irish hunters to draw mail-vans in the City and West Central areas of London, says an English exchange. The colour of the vans at least will seem familiar to the new arrivals, even if the drivers no longer wear red coats. for hunters will make an addition to the list in which the “Derby winner drawing a handsom cab” used to figure. Whether any Derby winner ever did draw a handsom is doubtful, but it is probable enough that horses which failed to win a “classic” were to be found on the ranks fifty or sixty years ago. Polo ponies have dashed about in front of butchers’ carts when those vehicles used to be driven at breakneck speed. Once-arrogant hackneys have dropped on four-wheeler ranks. A good many race-horses have been “hacked.” and more than one famous charger has had his place in the “liver brigade” in the Row.
