CHRISTMAS GIFTS
RANGE NARROWED DOWN. Early Christmas shoppers in Masterton are having their range of thought narrowed • down by war conditions. Rationing and an acute shortage of moderately-priced novelty goods make shopping this Christmas a different proposition to that of last year. There are, however, a number of New Zealand-made novelty lines which are coupon free. In the fancy department of a local business house such coupon-free items as boxed soaps, cosmetics, handbags etc., are displayed. Handkerchiefs, which were among the most usual gifts in the past, probably will not be 'given so freely this year as they appear in the ration schedule. New Zealand-made toys will be available as gifts for children, but as empty shelves and glass cases in the confectioners’ shops show, sweets are in very short supply. “I did think we were going to have a lean time, but from the way trade is keeping up the chances are for a good Christmas,” said the principal of one local business house.
