Dr John Cairney, medical superintendent of the Wellington hospital, has been appointed a member of the Medical Council. He takes the place of Dr Hugh Douglas, Hamilton, who has resigned. . The Rev F. J. Parker, Lower Hutt, and formerly of Masterton, has. been re-elected secretary for the district by the Wellington Methodist Synod.
Believed to be the oldest serving soldier in the New Zealand armed forces, Sergeant William John Pike, has died in the Auckland Hospital, after a short illness, at the age. of 68. Sergeant Pike, who was attached to an artillery regiment in the coast defence area, was a native of Wales, and he saw considerable service in the last world war. Christchurch members of the Democratic Labour Party have chosen Mr H. E. Herring, formerly Labour M.P. for Mid-Canterbury, as their candidate for the Christchurch East seat rendered vacant by the death of the Hon H. T. Armstrong. Other nominees, Messrs Douglas Crcsswell and Te Ari Pitama, withdrew in favour of Mr Herring. The death of Mr Leonard Stuart Wilmor McKenzie, a member of the Wellington City Council and connected with a pioneer family, occurred on Wednesday night. Mr McKenzie was born in Wellington 66 years ago and was the youngest son of the late Mr T. W. McKenzie, who came to Wellington in 1840 and was concerned in the management of the “Wellington Independent,” one of the earliest newspapers published in the city. Flying officer Kingi Te A. A. G. Tahiwi, who has been reported missing on air operations, is a member of a family well known in Wellington. He was educated at Wellington College and Victoria University College, where he was prominent in sport, but he was even belter known for his gifts of oratory and ability as a debater. He won the Plunket Medal for oratory and represented Victoria College in debating contests, including that for the Joy nt Scroll in Dunedin. Subsequently he became a well-known radio* announcer. He won his commission in New Zealand and left direct for England just over a year ago, since when he has twice spoken to New Zealand for the 8.8. C. He is 32 years of age.
