WOMEN’S DIVISION
WAIRARAPA COUNCIL NOMINATION OF WOMEN JURORS. THE LIQUOR PROBLEM. A meeting of the Wairarapa Council of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held yesterday in the Rest Room, Mrs K. Groves being in the chair. Motions of sympathy were passed to Mesdames F. W. Day, A. Donald, Herrick and Flynn in their bereavements. It was reported that the response to the request for country homes in the district where airmen needing recuperation might be boarded, had met with a generous response, five homes being made available. A sum of £5 was voted to a member for replacement of personal property lost in the earthquake. The Mauriceville-Ihuraua branch reported that it had sent a further parcel of 22 singlets, one jersey (homespun), and three balaclavas. A letter from headquarters stated that the W.D.F.U. had fitted out the whole crew of a ship patrolling New Zealand waters. A letter from the Pahiatua branch resigning from the Wairarapa Council was received with regret, and appreciation was expressed of the good work which had been carried out by the branch. It was, however, recognised that the South Hawke’s Bay Executive was so much nearer to Pahiatua. and that the resignation was justified. Mesdames K. Groves, Beu, Burch and Ordish were nominated from the executive for the position of women jurors. It was pointed out that volunteers were required, and that the W.D.F.U. should taka the opportunity of seeing that suitable women offered themselves.
The secretary was asked to write to headquarters pointing out that as the small fruit season was already here the Minister of Supplies should be approached on the question of an immediate allowance of sugar to housewives for preserves of all kinds. Members pointed out that the 414 million pounds of sugar used by the breweries might serve this useful purpose.
The deputation which waited on the Dominion Advisory Board reported to the executive. They had advocated that the W.D.F.U. support the W.C.T.U. in any proposals for the prohibition of alcohol as an emergency war measure. The speakers had been introduced by Mrs K. Groves and had taken their subjects as follows: —Mrs K. Groves, alcohol and crime; Mrs Maitland, alcohol and health; Mrs Barrel-, alcohol as sabotaging the war effort; Mrs Burch, represented the point of view of the country motherswith regard to the temptations to which their sons are exposed; and Mrs C. C. Jackson showed the impossibility of establishing a New Christian Order in which, alcohol still reigned.
