The Hon W. E. Parry, Minister of Internal Affairs, returned to Wellington today from Auckland. Miss Florence Bellis, of Worksop Road, Masterton, who had been visiting Gisborne, has returned home. Her Excellency Lady Newall has accepted appointment as titular head of the women’s units in the armed forces and the Emergency Reserve Corps, said the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, yesterday. As titular head of women’s units in the armed forces and the Emergency Reserve Corps, her Excellency will hold the following appointments: — Commandant-in-Chief, Women’s Royal New Zealand Naval Service; Commandant-in-Chief, Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps; Commandant-in-Chief Army Corps; Commandant-in-Chief, Women’s Auxiliary Air Force; Commandant-in-Chief, Women’s Civil Defence Services.

Once a familiar figure in the city of Wellington, Major Charles Thomas Tatum died in Manakau yesterday at the age of 85 years. Born in London, he came to New Zealand in 1879, and soon was, well-known in business circles, ultimately becoming partner in the firm of McTavish, Tatum and Co., land and estate agents, Lambton Quay. He was always interested iff military matters, and soon after his arrival in Wellington became a commissioned officer in the old Wellington City Rifles. After being for some years in business in the city, he took up farming in the Manakau district. Major Tatum was a member of the Wellington City Council from 1892 to 1896, and was a member of the New Zealand Boy Scouts’ Association for over 30 years.
