THE OPERA HOUSE
attitude of borough COUNCIL NO LICENCE TO BE GRANTED. UNLESS SURVEYOR’S REPORT IS ACTED UPON. Unless the Masterton Trust Lands Trust carries out earthquake-strength-ening work in accordance with the leport made by Messrs Harris and Burns, Public Works Department earthquakedamage surveyors, the Borough Council will not give its approval to the Opera House being used as a public building. In a discussion on the matter at last night’s council meeting, the borough engineer, Mr C. R. Mabson, said he agreed whole-heartedly with the surveyors’ report. From the Press report of the recent Trust Lands Trust discussion it would appear that the Opera House would be safe again with a little plastering and painting. That was not the case, and he had made the position quite clear to the secretary of the Trust. The work nronosed by the Trust did not affect the stability of the building. The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, said the council did not wish to be harsh in the matter. If the Trust was not satisfied with the surveyors’ report, the surveyors could quite easily come back to Masterton and discuss their report with the Trust.
