OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS

DANCE AT THE COLLEGE (To the Editor.) Sir, —Please allow a little of your valuable space to enable us to air our views upon the spirit shown by Mr Gair, in making his report to the board upon the A.F.V. dance held in the College Hall on the night of Friday, November 13. • Mr Gair reports the breakage of some chairs. It seems hardly credible that Mr Gair considers this slight damage excessive when one lakes into account; firstly that there were approximately 400 Service men present and secondly, the strength and value of the chairs. . . , We should very much like .to know where Mr Gair got his expert knowledge of the suitability of the College grounds for the exercising of this “necking” to which he referred. . . • With regard to the audacity of the soldier who replied, “O.K. 0.K., when Mr Gair spoke to him, we have come to the conclusion that Mr Gan must have been throwing orders to a man who has been used to' receiving orders from men who know how to give them. . J , Mr Gair asked the board to grant him latitude due to the force of his feelings. He apparently considers that men who have been months and Y eal ® under canvas, in the mud and slush land sleeping on straw, deserve no latitude whatsoever when they do get a chance of a little pleasure. In reply to Mr Nicol s reference, to men who may be called “heroes in a few months’ time, we wish to tell Mi Nicol that the attitude of Mr Gair and Co. is not very conducive to heroics, when you consider that these heroics will be for the benefit of these biased and uncharitable people, as well as foi people who understand something of a soldier’s feelings when undeservedly criticised. With al! due respect and appreciation to those officials who made the holding of our dance possible, we do consider that Mr Gair and should strive to understand a little more fully the difference between men and schoolboys. Thanking you, Sir — We are etc., JUST TROOpERS Masterton, November 17.
