Farmer Killed. The body of William Jebb, farmer, Matiere, was found on Friday hanging by a foot in a wineberry bush, 50 feet down a papa cliff face. Apparently his horse had stumbled and thrown him. When he failed to return home a search was instituted. Manpower Committee. The Wellington Manpower Appeal Committee, Messrs J. J- Scott, deputychairman, J. Arthurs, B. L. Hammond and L. R. Meadows, secretary, leaves Wellington on country circuit today. Appeals will be heard in the Wanganui, Manawatu, Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa districts. Day of Remembrance. Tomorrow, New Zealand university students, in common with students throughout the free world, will join in paying tribute to the memory of the Czech students who were murdered by the Nazis in Prague in 1939, and students in every land which has suffered under Nazi occupation. Chair of Theology.
The Presbyterian General Assembly, which is sitting at Auckland, postponed till the 1943 assembly the making of an appointment to the chair of theology made vacant by the death of Principal Dickie. The next assembly will be at Dunedin, and will open on November 3, 1943. Y.M.C.A. Workers.
Members of the Y.M.C.A. Ladies’ Auxiliary and helpers were busily engaged in making sandwiches and buttering buns for the men of the forces, in the Masterton Y.M.C.A. this morning. The work is carried out by teams of workers throughout the week, who make great quantities of sandwiches. When seen this morning the, ladies were making sandwiches with the dexterity which comes from experience.
Free Kindergarten Association. At the monthly meeting of the Masterton Free Kindergarten Association it was announced that the Government Housing Department had made a donation of a strip of land with a frontage to College Street, to be part of a building site for the free kindergarten. It was reported that the subscription and donations drive was progressing satisfactorily.
Military Damage to Roads. Advice has been received by the Makara County Council through the New Zealand Counties’ Association that the War Cabinet had approved of assistance being provided on a free basis to meet the extra cost of road maintenance necessitated by military traffic. It was stated that the work would be carried out by the local bodies, the expenditure being administered by the Public Works Department. >
