CROQUET LAWNS OPENING CEREMONY. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was. a large attendance of visitors and friends at the opening ul the croquet lawns on Saturday afternoon. The weather was fine. Mr W. Olsen (Mayor) congratulated the club, and said he was pleased to be present at the thirtieth opening of the lawns. Miss M. Anderson (patroness), who was a foundation member and who still takes an active part in the affairs of the club, played the first ball and declared the greens open for the season. Mrs W. Olsen (Mayoress) handed Miss Anderson a spray of lily of the valley. Shoulder sprays of roses were given to the Mayoress and Mrs R. j Small, of Palmerston North, a former member of the Croquet Club. Miss A. Anderson (president) thanked the Mayor for opening the lawns and wished the players an enjoyable season. The afternoon tea which was served in the pavilion, was much appreciated. The whoop-la and produce stall, which was well patronised, was in charge of Mesdames Fauvel, Gray and S. Daniel. Competitions were won by the following:—Hurry scurry, Mesdames H. Higginson and L. Brown; umbrella, Mrs McKeown, Mauriceville; runnerup, Mrs Palmer; peg, Mrs Houghton, Woodville; hoops, Mr G. West; runnerup, Mrs Spackman. The trophies were donated by Mesdames Olsen, Carter, Daniel and Misses Anderson. Personal Items. The death occurred in Palmerston North on Saturday of Mrs Alethe Christiansen in her 94th year. She was well known in Masterton and the Milo Bush in the early days. She was a sister of the late Mrs Anders Olsen and an aunt of Mr W. Olsen, Mayor of Eketahuna. Mr and Mrs V. L. Car roll, Mangaweka, are the guests of Mr and Mrs Wilkie Anderson, Springrock, Eketahuna. , , The Rev. Fetch. Wellington, who has been the guest of the Rev. I. K. Hopper, has returned to Wellington. Mrs R Small, Palmerston North, is the guest of Mrs H. Higginson, Newman Road. Mrs Kensington, Palmerston North, who had been staying with her daughter, Mrs P. Bouzaid, has returned home. , T ~ .. Mrs McKenzie, Palmerston North, is the guest of Mrs A. Rowden, Stanley Street. . • Mrs H. Duff, Hastings, is the guest of her sister, Mrs R. Gallagher, Liverpool House. , , „ Mrs Rabey. Wellington, who has been the gnuest of Mr and Mrs Snurdle, Stanley Street, has returned home.
