MADE BY AMERICANS TOWARDS TUNIS AND BIZERTA

It is reported, from Madrid that the authorities in Morocco have refused to allow German refugees from French Morocco to remain in Tangier, but have sent them to Ceuta and Melilla.

According to Morocco Radio NEWS NOT YET CONFIRMED BY ALLIED HEADQUARTERS ALGIERS CROWDS JEER AT MEMBERS OF AXIS COMMISSION (By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 11.15 a.m.) LONDON, November 15. The Morocco radio says American troops crossed the border into Tunisia on Saturday night and are making rapid progress towards Tunis and Bizerta, but there is no confirmation of this from Allied Headquarters. A British United Press correspondent says General Eisenhower is personally directing the new phase of the operations, which, according to official reports, is going to be one of the greatest in the British and American endeavour to occupy the entire Mediterranean area. The French Independent News Agency says it is understood that the French troops in Tunisia fighting the Germans are under the command of General Giraud. Axis planes are attempting to delay the Allied advance into Tunisia by harassing raids. Bougie, Bona and Djidjelli, all on the Algerian coast, have been bombed. Bombs hit populated quarters in Bona yesterday, killing and injuring many civilians. . . Violent aerial combats are reported over Tunisia, Sardinia and Sicily. The Morocco radio says General Eisenhower has taken special measures to prevent the landing of parachutists or airborne troops on the Algerian coast. Correspondents describe the derision and hatred with which the inhabitants of Algiers greeted 200 captured members of the Axis Armistice Commission traversing the city in trucks. Thousands watched their passage, greeting the Italians with shouts of “Macaroni salaud!” and less savoury epithets. They greeted the Germans, however, with growls of hatred. One correspondent says that when members of the Armistice Commission, including high army and navy officers, were being taken away, a crowd in the street yelled: ‘ Goodbye Macaroni! Down with the Axis I ” A few minutes later a truck full of tired and dirty American soldiers passed and the crowd cheered and cheered.
