CARTERTON

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton Women’s Institute was held on Thursday, when Mrs Pinfold presided over a fair attendance of members. Mr W. Martin gave an interesting address on the Chatham Islands. A vivid description of a tour of the islands in search of rare native flora was listened to with much interest and at the conclusion, Mr Martin was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The competitions were judged by Mrs Martin Johnson and resulted as follows:— Balaclava: Mrs A. T. Hawke, 1; Mrs L. J. Loftus, 2; Mrs H. Knutson, 3. Apron: Mrs G Steffert, 1; Mrs A. T. Hawke, 2; Miss M. Ray, 3. .... Mrs H. Knutson gave an interesting account of the recent council meeting held at Carterton. . Afternoon tea was dispensed. » MEETING AT PARKVALE. The monthly meeting of the Parkvale Women’s Institute was presided over by Mrs N. McKinnon. A number of skeins of Air Force wool was distributed among members to be made up. Arrangements were made for providing a free supper to soldiers on November 22. Two competitions were won by Mrs J. Jensen and Miss J. Warrington. Other competitions resulted as follow:— Senior:—Best bloom: Mrs E. Rose, 1; Mrs L. Rayner, 2; Mrs H. Rayner, 3. Junior:— Best bloom: Miss S. Rayner, 1) Miss H. McKinnon, 2; Miss G. Lukies, 3. Junior:— Sewing a worked table centre: Miss J. Lukies, 1; Miss M. Lukies, 2; Miss Mavis LukThe hostesses were Mrs W. King, Mrs J. Court and Miss S. Rayner. Patriotic Dance. The Belvedere schoolroom was well filled last evening, when a dance for patriotic purposes was held. A most enjoyable time was spent to music provided by Mrs Rogers. Much appreciated extras were played by Misses E. Lorenzen and B. James. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr A. Nimot and Miss M. Ashton. Mr A. E. Reid acted as M.C. Fruit Crops Damaged. Fruit crops in the district were severely damaged as the result of the heavy gale on Wednesday night.

Personal. Mr W. Hadley has found it necessary to enter Croydon Hospital for treatment.
