CARTERTON
RED CROSS SOCIETY PRESENTATION OF CERTIFICATES. (“Times-Age” Special.) The committee of the Carterton SubCentre of the Red Cross Society, together with the Transport and V.A. sections, held a social gathering in the Masonic Hall, when certificates won during the year were presented. The Mayoress, Mrs Taverner, and the president of the Society, Mrs L. J. Loftus, were presented with bouquets. Mrs Taverner, when presenting the certificates, congratulated the candidates on their efforts to be of use in the present strenuous times, and in giving up their leisure to study and practice. Songs were contributed by Mrs Webb and Misses Barron and A. and V. Sorensen, and a recitation by Miss Jacobsen. The senior V.A. members gave a demonstration of bandaging and bed-mak-ing. The transport section were seen in stretcher bearing and gas drill. The displays provided evidence of the amount of work and study the members had put in. The following is a list of certificates presented:—Kitchen management: Mrs F. Trapp. Elementary hygiene and sanitation: Mesdames de Norville, Ovens, Harrington, Misses McLean, Newbold and Eagle. Elementary first aid: Mesdames Heatherington, Burke, G. Reid, de Norville, Hall, Misses Ashton, Colson, Merewood, G. Bond, K. O’Reilly, L. Bond, B. Walsh. Transport section: Mrs Jones, Misses A. Sorensen, Campbell, Lawrence. W.W.S.A. cycle corps: Mrs Green, Misses R. Steven, T. Goodin. Senior home nursing: Mrs Steffert, Misses Ingley, Newbold, Vaughan. A.R.P. taken by Transport members, Misses Gregor, Z. Freer, Vaughan, Hamer, Higginson, Tully, Lawrence, Collier, Lamb, Campbell, Waterson, Sorensen, Mesdames Fairbrother, Skeet, Moroney, Hastie, Jones, Tait. Dajice at Belvedere. The residents of Belvedere, Carrington and the surrounding districts are reminded of the dance to be held in the Belvedere schoolroom tonight. The proceeds will be devoted to patriotic purposes. Church Service. A Church of England service will be held at Longbush on Sunday, at 2.30 p.m. Parcels for Nurses. The members of the Carterton branch of the Women’s Division of the Farm- 1 ers’ Union recently forwarded Christmas parcels to Nurses M. Smart, Jean Bond and Una Goodin. A parcel of woollen goods was sent to Pte. M. Johnson. Boy Scouts’ Card Party. The prizes at the weekly card party held by the Boy Scouts in the Band room were won as follows: —Ladies: Mrs A. Jensen 1, Mrs L. Goodin 2. Men’s section: Mr Edwards 1, Mrs Paterson 2. New Books in Library. The following new books have been added to the shelves of the Carterton Public Library: —“V for Vengeance,” D. Wheatley; “Two Different People,” P. Ramsay; “One Small Candle,” C. Roberts; “And One Was Beautiful,” A. D. Miller; “Hinemoa,” A. Flaxman; “Battered Caravanserai,” Paul Capon; “No Past is Dead,” J. J. Connington; “A Leaf in the Storm,” Lin Yutang. Personal Items. Mrs W. H. Hayden, of Holloway Street, Carterton, who had been under treatment at a hospital, has returned to her home. Staff-Sergt. G. A. McPherson was met by several members of Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F., last evening, and handed a gift from the Lodge. P.D.G.M. Bro. C. J. DeLacey made the presentation and wished Staff-Sergt. McPherson good health and good luck. P.G. Bro. G. S. Bruce spoke on behalf of the Wellington District Management Committee, and extended best wishes from the committee. Sergt. McPherson suitably replied. Mr Christie, zoning officer' for the North Island, is visiting the South Wairarapa in connection with zoning of transport matters.
