MARTINBOROUGH
BOROUGH COUNCIL HIGH COST OF FENCING MATERIAL. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Martinborough Borough Council was held last night. There were present: Councillors C. W. Skill (chairman), W. H. Corfield, F. Gray, W. J. Blissett, T. A. Hamilton, L. G. Sievers, H. T. Parsons, and T. H. Smith. Apologies for absence were received from the Mayor (Mr C. R. Holmes) and Councillor M. Mulvaney. The Minister of Defence wrote refusing to accept any liability for the hire of the old Town Hall as a drilling centre for the. Home Defence Guard. The Postmaster, in reply to a request by the council agreed to attend to the town clock at the post office. The Parks Committee reported that arrangements had been made to erect a fence at Considine Park, but owing to the high prices of material, it was deemed advisable to do only what was absolutely necessary to shut off the baths entrance from the grazing ground. The action of the committee was approved. It was decided that the baths be opened as soon as possible, and that the appointment of a caretaker be left in the hands of Councillor Skill. The Town Hall Committee recommended a reduction of the picture theatre rent by £1 per week in view of the damage done to the building by the earthquake. It was decided on the motion of Councillor Gray that the Manpower Board be asked to return men released in classes 2 and 3 to the districts from which they were called up. Blackout Successful.
The blackout last night is reported to have been very successful, there being complete co-operation between the authorities and the residents.
