NO NEW PROGRESS

MADE BY THE GERMANS AT STALINGRAD DEFENDERS REINFORCED. ONLY RECENT ENEMY GAIN IN EASTERN CAUCASUS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONNDON, October 30. The Germans have thrown in masses of men and tanks in a renewed assault on Stalingrad’s northern industrial, belt. They have made no further progress since they broke into a factory area 24 hours ago. Fresh reinforcements have reached the Russian defenders of the city. In a big tank clash, the Soviet forces, although outnumbered, more than held their own and drove the enemy back with the loss of 16 tanks. Russian pressure on the enemy flanks north and south of Stalingrad has met with further success. Mr Paul Winterton, the Moscow correspondent of the London “NewsChronicle,” states that Rumanians north-west of Stalingrad are taking terrific punishment. All efforts to regain their lost base have been smashed.

South of Stalingrad the Russian troops have succeeded in pushing forward in spite of very strong enemy fortifications.

The enemy’s only success today was in the Nalchik area in the Eastern Caucasus, where superior German forces have pushed the Russians back. The enemy attacks at Mozdok, some 50 miles to the’ east of Nalchik, have temporarily come to a halt. In the Western Caucasus the Russians are holding ' firm to their new defence line covering the Black Sea port of Tuapse. The Russians have cleared the enemy from a number of heights and valleys and have improved their positions in several sectors. FORD TIRE FACTORY TRANSFER TO SOVIET UNION, UNDER LEASE-LEND SCHEME. The machinery will be dismantled and packed ready for transit as soon as the final details are settled.
